Managing Product Attributes and Families

Last updated July 23, 2024

Product attributes are the building blocks of your product catalog in Akeneo. They define the characteristics that make your products unique and allow for effective organization and management. This guide explains how to create, modify, and manage product attributes and families for a robust and efficient product catalog structure.

Defining and Managing Attributes:

  • Navigate to the Attributes Section: In the Akeneo interface, access the "Catalog" section and then choose "Attributes".
  • Creating New Attributes:
  • Choose Attribute Type: Decide on the types of data your attribute will store (e.g., text, number, dropdown, date, etc.).
  • Define Attribute Properties: Provide a unique attribute code, a user-friendly name (for display), and a description.
  • Set Visibility: Determine where this attribute should be visible (i.e., on the product page, in product search, etc.).
  • Validation Rules: If needed, add validation rules to ensure data consistency (e.g., required fields, length limitations, format constraints).
  • Managing Existing Attributes:
  • Updating Attributes: Edit existing attributes to modify their properties or visibility.
  • Deleting Attributes: Delete attributes you no longer need (but exercise caution as this may impact existing products).

Working with Product Families:

  • Creating Families:
  • Define Family Properties: Consider your product categories and group related products into families.
  • Assign Attributes: Select which attributes apply to products within this specific family.
  • Managing Families:
  • Editing Families: Adjust the family's name, description, or assigned attributes as needed.
  • Deleting Families: Caution: Deleting a family may affect existing products if they are assigned to it.

Tips for Effective Product Attribute Management:

  • Start with a Strong Plan: Before creating attributes, carefully consider the information you need about your products.
  • Use Consistent Naming Conventions: Choose clear and descriptive attribute codes and names to maintain order.
  • Leverage Predefined Attributes: For commonly used product attributes, use pre-defined attributes to ensure consistency.
  • Review and Update Regularly: Periodically check your attributes to make sure they are relevant and still meet your needs.
